The 2420 Logic Controller, for F&G/ESD 2400 System, provides eight (8) Opto-isolated Supervised open Collectors Output for the direct activation’s of solenoids, relays, status lamps, xenon beacons, sounder, etc. with maximum load of 2A @ 24VDC.  The Output Card is designed to have the positive logic characteristics in that are source current from the positive power bus and the loads. The output devices are connected between the common power bus (OV of the 24VDC I/O) and the card output on the I/O connector.

Each Output channel (based on Smart device), has a voltage loop back circuit which verifies the correct operation of the output channel and also detects and indicates the open and short circuit of the load.
The output channel will be deactivated when a short circuit is detected (i.e. high temperature or high current >2A). The card, based 8 microprocessor receives output command signal (ON or OFF) from the 2401-CPU Facility Card which executed the dedicated logic output (application program) and places the update data in the Output table of the 2420 Card via the serial line communication. The 2401-CPU Facility Card, using proprietary communication software through high-speed RS 485 serial lines, regularly updates the Output table of the 2420 Card, over the serial line.  Each output circuit is automatically tested by microprocessor using diagnostic routine to check that the logic card circuits are correctly working. Forcing each output circuit (pulse test) simulating field device activation makes this.

In case of output malfunction, the microprocessor detects it, displaying the Fault state through the front panel LED’s. When a Fault is detected the 2420 microprocessor communicates a Fault status message to the 2401-CPU Facility Module. To assure the correct functionality of the card a watchdog timer circuit provides the monitoring of the card operation via a digital output. This is performed by a diagnostic software routine of the microprocessor. The watchdog circuit state is visualised through LED’s and one N.E. (Normally Energised) relay with SPDT contacts is available on I/O connector. In the unlikely event of microprocessor or logic failure, the watchdog output goes in alarm condition and turns off the LED’s status and De-Active the relay.

Furthermore, to assure the correct functionality of the card a Watchdog (WD) timer circuit provides the monitoring of the card operation via a digital output. This is performed during the same diagnostic software routine by the microprocessor. The Watchdog circuit states is displayed with front panel LED’s and available on a Normally Energised (N.E.) relay with SPDT contacts (on the I/O connector). In case of a microprocessor failure, the Watchdog will turn to Alarm condition, switching off the front panel LED’s and will de-active the relay.  The front card panel is composed by multiple double LED’s for the indication of Active and Fault for each channel status; serial line LED’s which display the communication condition between the 2420 card and the system; a double LED which displays the Watchdog condition; some push buttons for the execution of local commands.

These push buttons permit the execution of the following actions:  
SEL  → Output channel selection  
INH → Inhibition of the selected channel   
TEST → Activation of the an auto-test card function and front Lamp test  

The frontal push buttons can be used only if they were activated by the 2401-CPU Facility module. A particular feature of this card is that it can be easily checked while powered, without affecting its normal operation and specially the system integrity. To perform all the maintenance operations the cards is provided a front connector, for the connection of the Hand Held Monitor (2490 HHM). Using the Hand Held Monitor is possible to read the status of channels: Normal – Alarm, force the Outputs, in order to test the application software and logic’s.
